Accra International Airport, formerly known as Kotoka International Airport, serves Ghana’s capital. The site began as a British Royal Air Force base during World War II and transferred to civilian control after the war. In 1956, President Kwame Nkrumah initiated its conversion into a passenger terminal. Completed in 1958. In 1969, the airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in honor of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka (1926–1967), a member of the National Liberation Council who was killed during an attempted coup at what is now the airport forecourt. Ironically, General Kotoka had helped lead the coup that removed Nkrumah’s government.
On 23 February 2026, the airport officially reverted to the name Accra International Airport.
