Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain its independence in 1957. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who was responsible for the successful negotiations with the British and declared independence, became the first Prime Minister and then President of Ghana.
The red represents the blood of those who died in the country’s struggle for independence from Great Britain, the gold represents the mineral wealth of the country, the green symbolizes the country’s rich forests and natural wealth, and the black star is the symbol of African emancipation.

The Honorable John Dramani Mahama is the sixth and current sitting President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. Mahama is the first Ghanaian president elected to a non-consecutive second term, having previously served as president from 2012-2017.
God bless our homeland Ghana,
And make our nation great and strong,
Bold to defend for ever
The cause of Freedom and of Right.
Fill our hearts with true humility
Make us cherish fearless honesty,
And help us to resist oppressor's rule
With all our will and might for evermore.
Hail to thy name, O Ghana.
To thee we make our solemn vow;
Steadfast to build together
A nation strong in Unity;
With our gifts of mind and strength of arm,
Whether night or day, in mist or storm,
In every need whate'er the call may be,
To serve thee, Ghana, now and evermore.
Raise high the flag of Ghana,
And one with Africa advance;
Black Star of hope and honour,
To all who thirst for liberty;
Where the banner of Ghana freely flies,
May the way to freedom truly lie
Arise, arise, O sons of Ghanaland,
And under God march on for evermore.

Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957. At independence, it remained a Constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II serving as head of state.
In April 1960, Ghanaians voted to adopt a Republican system of Government led by a President. A new Constitution removed the British monarch as Head of State, and on July 1, 1960, then-Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah became the first President of Ghana.
