Global Diaspora

Understanding the unique intricacies of the Global Diaspora Community of African-Descent)

The African Union definition of Diaspora:

The Global African Diaspora consists of millions of people of African descent living outside the African continent, driven primarily by historical forced migrations like the transatlantic slave trade as well as modern voluntary migration.

Definition and History

Core Meaning: The African Union defines the diaspora as, “Consisting of people of African origin living outside the continent, irrespective of their citizenship and nationality and who are willing to contribute to the development of the continent and the building of the African Union." https://au.int/en/diaspora-division

Historically Unique Group (HUG)

Historically Unique Diaspora Identity

People of African descent in the Western diaspora, particularly African Americans, represent a historically unique community shaped by forced displacement, enslavement, and systematic cultural erasure.

Because many ancestral languages, lineages, and cultural practices were deliberately disrupted, this community developed a distinct identity through a process of ethnogenesis—the formation of a new shared culture, history, and sense of belonging.

  • This identity is not simply a direct continuation of one specific African tradition.
  • It reflects the resilience, adaptation, and cultural creativity of people who rebuilt community under extreme conditions.
  • It remains deeply connected to Africa while also carrying its own historical experiences and cultural expressions.

The Impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Deliberate separation: European enslavers intentionally separated and mixed people from different African ethnic, cultural, and language backgrounds to limit communication, weaken communal bonds, and reduce the likelihood of organized resistance.

Loss of Direct Lineage: Enslaved people were stripped of their names, languages, and family structures, making it impossible for many descendants to trace lineage past the era of slavery.

African Union Sixth Region

The Sixth Region includes people of African origin living outside Africa, including:

  • Descendants of enslaved Africans
  • People born abroad to African parents
  • Recent African immigrants and overseas workers
  • Anyone committed to Africa’s development, regardless of passport or nationality.
