CHIEFTANCY

The history, authority, jurisdictions, and current initiatives of Ghana’s traditional leadership institutions and the policies that recognize them.

Understanding Traditional Leadership

Ghana’s tribal and traditional jurisdiction is organized through a recognized chieftaincy system that works alongside the National Constitutional Government.

Structure of Traditional Authority

Traditional Councils:

Most communities and lands in Ghana fall under the authority of a traditional leader, such as a Paramount Chief, Divisional Chief, or Queen Mother.

Leadership Hierarchy:

Chiefs oversee traditional areas and help address customary matters, lineage concerns, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
